From this point, Vincent regularly got on and off the barge to Veenoord. This place also features in his letters:
'The little village or city here mainly consists of a long string of houses along the harbour, many of which are new, although there are a few grand old buildings too .'
Hoogeveen developed into one of the important barge centres in the Netherlands. At its peak, around 1800, there were around 500 barges registered in Hoogeveen.
