Makkum is a very small hamlet; in 1910, it had 19 houses, including the mill. There aren’t many more houses today, and the mill is still standing. Apart from the mill, there’s a campsite called De Molenhorst. A walking route through Holthe, Makkum and Lieving starts nearby. The mill is privately owned and is a popular wedding venue. It often serves as a checkpoint during the Drentse Fiets4Daagse, a four-day cycling event held in Drenthe every year.

Makkum’s mill is the successor of a mill that used to stand on the other side of the road. That mill was blown over. Former polder mill De Groeve from the Zuidlaren municipality was used for the construction of the new mill. The current mill was heavily damaged during a storm in November 1973, but all of the damage done to the building was repaired. At present, the mill is in good condition and runs regularly.
