You're standing at the intersection of the Dennenweg with the Stieltjeskanaal. Construction of the canal was in full swing when Van Gogh was here.
The canal was important for shipping but also for drainage. The canal was completed in 1884. Vincent may have painted his work with the turf huts on the Dennenweg. On October 3, when he has only been in this region for a day, he already wrote about the huts and the beautiful skies.
