Mill De Hondsrug has its roots in the Groningen town of Farnsum. Many of Drenthe’s mills originate elsewhere and have been rebuilt in Drenthe. This is often because an existing mill was destroyed by fire. This is also the case for De Hondsrug. Seven years after it was built in 1863, the mill went up in flames. A new mill was built, but it too burnt down in 1909. A year later, the current mill from Groningen was rebuilt here. This mill was given the name of the ridge in the area's landscape: De Hondsrug. The mill is still occasionally operational.
De Hondsrug is a so-called belt mill (a type of windmill atop a small natural or artificial mound), and is beautifully located by the edge of the village. The mill’s exterior is not its original exterior, but the result of restoration activities in the eighties. Its cap and hull were once coated in bitumen; the current mill has a straw cap. Its hull has been painted white, which, combined with the mill’s green paintwork, forms a beautiful whole.
