One of the first people Van Gogh met in Drenthe must have been Albert Hartsuiker. He was a railway employee and owned a lodging house. Vincent rented part of his attic during his stay with him. Vincent wrote letters to his brother at the lodging house:

down the Hoogeveense Vaart through the peat bogs, right across the south-east corner of
Drenthe. Then, northwards from here it seems that there’s magnificent heathland all the way to Assen. I’m certainly curious, as you can imagine.’
