Aalden, Benneveld, Meppen, Wezup and Zweeloo together form the ‘Artists village of Zweeloo’. They are a member of Euroart, the European Federation of Artists' Colonies. In the 19th century, artists from all over Europe sought places of unspoiled nature where people lived in harmony with their environment. These still often unspoiled places are united in Euroart. Most painters came for the beautiful hall house farms with anchor beam trusses in the middle of nature. Van Gogh was one of the few who was inspired by the melancholy and drama of the peat area. Zweeloo and its surrounds still attract a lot of artists.
