Is De Zaandplatte Drenthe’s most attractive mill? A few years ago, a questionnaire determined it is. Part of the mill’s appeal is its exquisite location. Owing to its beautiful location, several years ago, the mill even featured as the set of a Dutch horror film, The Windmill Massacre or The Windmill in the United States. De Zaandplatte used to be located a few kilometres away in Echten. For years, this belt mill (a windmill atop a small natural or artificial mound) was being used as a summer house by the adjacent summer campsite. Even though, hidden among the trees, it wasn’t very visible. In the nineties, this changed; both the mill and its surrounding area were sanitised. Partly by virtue of its location along a touristic cycling path heading towards Dwingelerveld National Park, it generates a lot of interest.
