A ‘snikke’ is a boat about 11 to 15 metres long with one mast. These boats were
often pulled by a horse on the canals. Transporting materials around 1883 was
largely done on the water. There were several transport providers on the canal
between Hoogeveen, Nieuw-Amsterdam/Veenoord and Erica. Vincent took the
‘snikke’ with final destination Nieuw-Amsterdam/Veenoord, though his ambi-
tion previously was to travel as far east as possible. It may be he was unsure about finding a place to stay in Erica, which is even further towards the borderwith Germany.
