De Arend

The roots of Coevorden’s mill De Arend lie in Haarlem. Not long ago, the Canadian city of Vancouver almost built a replica of Coevorden’s De Arend. Sadly, plans were halted due to the start of the economic crisis at the time. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of an active group of millers, De Arend has been operational again since 2013. The mill runs every Saturday. In the area when it’s milling? Drop by De Arend! It hosts many original and fun activities.

De Arend’s history isn’t entirely clear. The mill is probably from Haarlem, but aren’t exactly sure where its originated. The mill had a different function at its previous location—a fact that can be deduced from all kinds of peculiarities in its construction. In the seventies, the state of the mill was deplorable, and it was completely overgrown with ivy. A succession of renovation activities have restored the mill’s former handsome appearance. It has even been painted in the colours it would have had around 1937.
