Four days back to nature, off the grid. The Dutch Forest Trail is a 4-day hike of 112 kilometers through the quietest forests of northern Netherlands. Here you can hike without encountering people. Here you can walk in silence if you wish. Here you wake up in the morning to the loud chirping of birds. Here, your shoes still get dirty. And so will you.
The trail winds through the most beautiful forests in Drenthe and Friesland and follows existing forest paths. The nature reserve contains a wide variety of flora and fauna. You will pass a few cozy, characteristic villages, such as Beetsterzwaag, Bakkeveen, Appelscha, and Diever. You will also walk through the former penal colony of Veenhuizen. After four days, the hike ends at the Steenwijk train station.

Route
The Dutch Forest Trail starts in the Frisian town of Beetsterzwaag and ends at the Steenwijk train station. The path runs through Drenthe and Friesland and is mostly natural trails (unpaved). You will cross beautiful nature reserves on winding sandy paths, along streams, over bridges, and through muddy forest paths. The hike is challenging because the distances are quite long. There are no elevation changes. You walk between 25 and 28 kilometers each day. That is about 6.5 to 7 hours of walking per day. Therefore, a good walking condition is necessary.
