The drawbridge that Vincent painted was situated right on the municipal boundary between Veenoord and Nieuw Amsterdam, two new settlements created to support the peat industry.
From his room, Vincent could see the drawbridge, the homes spanning the Heerendijk and a mill on the left across the canal.
Nowadays, the bridge is located a bit further east than the one Van Gogh painted at the time. It was directly opposite his lodgings at the time.
