Shortly after Van Gogh arrived in Drenthe, forests were planted here as an investment by the owner of the Kremboong sugar factory on Java. In 1938 the forests were largely cut down and the land prepared for cultivation. The hilliest area is located at this spot and was not cultivated. There has been no management here for many years so nature has had free reign to return to its rugged origins.
