This region is described as ‘Siberië’ (Siberia) on old maps. The area probably got
that name in the French period because it was remote and deserted. Vincent
also experienced that he was far removed from the urban environment he was
used to in The Hague. He had a shortage of painting materials and couldn't buy
them in the region. Having the painting supplies sent from The Hague was also
difficult because his money was almost gone.
