Zeldenrust

The mill Zeldenrust has a unique history. From the autumn of 1942 until April 1945, this mill was the hiding place of a Jewish family from Nieuw-Amsterdam. The mill Zeldenrust has a unique history. From the autumn of 1942 until April 1945, this mill was the hiding place of a Jewish family from Nieuw-Amsterdam. The owner of the mill, Jacoba Omvlee, took a huge risk hiding them. After her death, she was posthumously awarded the honorific Righteous Among the Nations by the State of Israel. Her seven children, also actively involved in hiding the family, were awarded the same title.

Zeldenrust remained in possession of the Omvlee family, the descendants of the mill’s owner during the war, for a considerable time. The family had an animal-feed business there for years, and later, a garden centre. After these companies were dissolved, their associated buildings were demolished. The mill stands alone again—with the miller’s home at some distance. A new residential district is now arising on the site. New houses being built there are height restricted on account of the mill’s biotope.
