There was already a Protestant church in New Schoonebeek, as this area was primarily Protestant at the end of the 18th century. With the arrival of this Catholic church, Nieuw Schoonebeek had two churches. Both the Protestant and Catholic church towers were once painted by Vincent van Gogh, featuring in his painting ‘Landscape at dusk’.
