The Exloo route takes you along Drentse Hondsrug in the Exloo forestry. The forestry consists of areas of production forest and so-called “storm forest.” This forest is called storm forest, because new trees grow from the roots of trees—still partly in the ground—that have been blown over during storms. There are many prehistoric burial mounds along the route. These burial mounds are protected archaeological monuments. The route is suitable for advanced MTBers.

The route starts by a dolmen. After a loop, you cycle back, and are able to choose between a dirt track and a bicycle path. You also pass a small pathway towards open landscape, an old motorcycle circuit, agricultural pathways and a sandy slope. Some parts of the route are excellent for practicing your steering technique. You can use the shortened route by the old motorcycle circuit to return to the departure point.
The route is connected with the 5-kilometre route through the Hunzebos woodland via a 2-kilometre connecting route, which is a short but attractive route. The route starts with two small climbs and a short downhill section. It then continues along a steep track towards the Hunze, a minor river. As a result of the peat in the area, water doesn’t drain into the soil as quickly here as on the sand in the northern loop.
You can start this route at:
- Carpool Ees, Schoolstraat, 9536 in Ees (along the N34)
- Sand pit (Zandgat) Kremer, Buinerstraat 8, 9531CG in Exloo
- Land van Bartje Ees, Buinerweg 8, 9536 PG in Ees
- Exloo dolmen (Hunebed), Bodenpad in Exloo
This is a special dolmen located between Exloo and Valthe. The existence of this dolmen is not very well known and it is not well cared for.
