During the 'Symphony of colour’ walking route (8 km), you will stroll through the villages of Oud-Aalden and Zweeloo where you can taste the atmosphere of the old Drentse brink villages that have attracted many painters. In his letters, Vincent frequently described the colours he saw, such as shades of grey, lilacs and the most delicate greens in the growing corn.

Inspired by other artists’ stories, Vincent van Gogh moved to Drenthe in the autumn of 1883. He arrived at the train station in Hoogeveen and travelled onwards by trekschuit (tugged-boat) to South-East Drenthe a few weeks later. These walking routes will allow you to walk a mile in Van Gogh's shoes. Discover the locations where he stayed, painted and drew. The walking routes will allow you to discover what Vincent experienced here as they lead you through the landscape with which he fell in love. We have four Van Gogh Drenthe walking routes available.

On clear days, you can see the church tower of Sleen from this path. That tower was one of the highest towers in Drenthe before it was struck by lightning and completely destroyed in 1867.

Aalden, Benneveld, Meppen, Wezup and Zweeloo together form the ‘Artists village of Zweeloo’. They are a member of Euroart, the European Federation of Artists' Colonies.

Artists villages

The atmosphere that Vincent van Gogh described in his letter when he arrived in Zweeloo can best be experienced here in Oud-Aalden.

Centuries-old villages

You have a beautiful view of the ‘es’ of the village from this spot. The ‘es’ (plural ‘essen’) is a higher agricultural field where food for people and animals was grown.
